Paramus High School
Class Of 1964
|
Somehow
my target of January 1st to send a New Year
email came and went faster than I expected. Someone
once said (not a clue who), “Life is like a roll of
toilet paper. The less that’s left, the faster it
spins.” Interesting thought. Speaking of thoughts,
I’ve been having some of my own lately. That in itself
is a scary thought that usually makes people around me
nervous. It’s a crapshoot as to where they might
lead.
Recently, I have found myself thinking about the
passing of Danny Holovach and Joe Basil, and about how
fragile and temporary life is. Back in October Danny
was alive and well. Ten weeks later he was gone. Joe
was sick for some time, so while it wasn’t a complete
surprise to hear about him, yet it was.
Joe
was an interesting guy with a great sense of humor, a
love for life, fearless, and always willing to duke it
out with Don Sanns. After all these years it remains a
mystery to me why such good friends fought like cat
and dog. For those of you who know Don, you also know
that he has a short fuse…a VERY short fuse. He loved
Joe, and he hated Joe. Go figure.
Joe
was the first person I know of to wear saddle shoes,
those black and white shoes the cheerleaders wore. He
did so despite the harassment and ridicule that came
in heavy doses. He was also the first person that I
can recall who had matching sweaters with his
girlfriend. For some reason I think it was Janet
Spindler, but I can’t say for sure.
Some
of you may be thinking, “Oh no, it was Kathy Edwards
and ?” Well, you would be partially correct. You have
to consider that whether it was Richie Trinchieri or
Jerry Giampetruzzi or Bob Mulcahey, she probably
bought a matching sweater without telling them, kept
it in her locker, and put it on whenever her would be
boyfriend wore his. In my book that doesn’t count, so
point goes to Joe.
I’ve
always considered Joe a good friend, one that I have
many find memories of. Someday I’ll post them on the
Class of 1963 web site, provided the statue of
limitation applies to all of our past
indiscretions. Sad indeed, but that’s what got me to
thinking about the Class of 1963 and the Class of
1964, and what a unique relationship we had with one
another.
When
we were in the 6th grade, all of us went to
the newly opened high school. Some of us like McManus,
Salvatore, Sheridan, Jerry G, Bob Reme, Freddy
Weissner, and many more stayed at the high school
until we graduated. You may recall that every year we
advanced; they dropped the year below us until it was
a 3 year school comprised of 10th, 11th and 12th
graders.
Although we attend high school at the same time as the
Class of 1962, it just wasn’t the same. I knew people
in the Class of 1962 only because my brother graduated
that year, and I was on the varsity wrestling team
with some of them. It was different with the Class of
1963. Perhaps it was because we were with them in the
same place for so long, or perhaps it was because of
the successes we had in sports. We won everything that
year. We couldn’t have done it without them, and they
couldn’t have done it without the Class of 1964. It
was a rare feat that we were State Champions in
football, NNJIL and County Champions in soccer,
basketball, baseball, and track. I think we even won
the “ Battle of the Bands” at the Teaneck Armory!
Who
knows for certain what brought these two classes
together in a way like no other two classes. Teachers
and coaches I have spoken with over the years have
said the same thing. Without exception, every one of
them has said those were the best years of their
careers because of their relationship with us and the
Class of 1963.
Not
long ago, I spoke to Al Kuebler. He suggested that I
consider a combined Class of 1963 and 1964
reunion. Since then, I have heard from many people
telling me what a great time they at our reunion, and
that they don’t want to wait another five years for
the next one. Perhaps a full tilt combined reunion in
late 2013 might be a good idea. I’m going to post a
survey on our website to see what people think.
Also, I don’t plan to wait until then to see many of
the people I didn’t get a chance to visit with at the
reunion. I was there, but I was busy. I plan to have
two regional annual “Mini Reunions” starting this
fall. They will be held in New Jersey and Northern
California . For those of you on the East Coast, you
may want to consider making the NCAL Reunion a
destination reunion. Think wine. Think Sonoma County
. Think Viansa Winery. Think September! The link below
will take you to the site. Details to follow.

Yo.
Hey, nice web site. I saw it mentioned by someone on
Classmates.com. I'm from the class of 1969, so I guess I'm
just a young whippersnapper.
I've attended most. or all, of the '69 reunions, but I
have not heard about the PHS 50th anniversary. Sounds like
a great idea, but I would like more info. What else do you
know?
I am living in Delaware now (for the past 33 years!), so
the drive is not too bad.
Please keep me informed, or let me know how I can help.
Cheers!
Mike Casale
PHS '69

Hello all
I have the wonderful task (as I have nothing else on my
plate????!!!) of confirming and updating our class list of
US postal and email addresses. This is in preparation for
the 50th anniversary celebration of Paramus HS.
The events are being organized by Charlie Brown and a core
of 1960 grads. The event will be held September 28, 29,
2007. It sounds a long way off..but it will be here before
you know it. The hotel has been booked and HS events are
scheduled.
I understand that The Cornerstone Committee is holding a
meeting 2/3/06 (which I cannot attend because of my upcoming
radiation in NYC)..I believe they would like the first 4
classes to have their own celebration on the 30th?
When I know more, you will know more.
Charlie told me that the invitations
will be word of mouth and online only.
www.paramus.K12.com and
www.paramushs1963.com
If you know of any changes for anyone, kindly share with me.
Hope to hear from you. If you receive this 2X..its because
of my address book?!! And NOT my brain.:)
Love
Carolyn

New!
Thank
you for all your prayers and support to me throughout
this entire year. I want to let you know that Bruce is
finally having his hip replacement 12/30. We will be in
NJ for a few weeks. After he is well enough we will
come back to DE.
I will be having
radiation therapy for my tumor starting in Feb. This is
to stop the growth of the tumor..not shrink it. If I
don’t do this, I will lose the vision and movement of my
R eye. I will be having 33 treatments; everyday, M-F at
Mt Sinai. I will be staying with Sharon Duggan. The
side effects are minimal and temporary. Keep me on your
prayer list, ya hear?
On a lighter
note…Charlie Brown is organizing the 50th
anniversary celebration of PHS. Mark the dates…9/28-29,
2007 at PHS and Park Ridge Marriot. No invitations will
be send…word of mouth and website info. I hope all my
efforts to keep everyone’s email up to date is working.
Thank you and
keep in touch.
Love
Carolyn
Health in 2006.

New!
I'd
like to do 2 things, with this e-mail....
1st
and foremost I'd like to tell Carolyn's ANGELS...how
much they are appreciated, and how she would not have
made it the last 2 years without you guys. She is
blessed to have you.
A Quote from Carolyn...."I appreciate all the support to
my medical account. I could never make it, without all
my PHS friends".
The
2nd thing is to give all of her friends an update on her
condition.
Last
week she went to Mt Sinai Hospital to consult with
a radiologist-oncologist. Her doctor, Dr Post
suggested that this was the next step in her treatment.
It
was decided she will need to start a new form of
treatment....she will begin radiation treatment.
The form of radiation is called Novalis. It will consist
of small doses of radiation every day ..33 treatments.
This will be done over a 6 week period The goal is to
stop the tumor from growing any bigger because of the
surrounding crucial nerves. The area of her brain where
the tumor is located is not operable…too risky…that’s
why this form of treatment has was recommended. It has
been suggested that Carolyn not wait much longer than
the new year…they are trying to avoid any of her present
conditions from deteriorating with her eye (movement and
lesser acuity), or ear area.
The possible side effects from this treatment are
headaches, which can be controlled with RX, and
fatigue. .
She will need to go through some further testing, that
will include MRI's, and a Cat Scan. She will be fitted
for a face mask and skull markers for the radiation.
After she completes this round of radiation, she will
still require follow-up MRI's to make sure that there
has been NO growth after treatment
While going through this treatment Sharon Duggan Twomey
has offered to share her home during this long
process.
Carolyn is scared of this treatment...but she has a good
attitude, as always!!
Keep those prayer coming,
Count your blessings

Hi Rip,
How are you doing? How do you like
California? Congrats on your promotion. Just dropping a
line to let everyone know I have moved to Las Vegas! We
left on September 1st and arrived on Labor
Day. By we, I mean my son and his new wife, her parent’s
and brother also moved here. I brought the whole family.
My new address is 8975 W. Warm Springs Road, Apt. 1034,
Bldg. 6, Las Vegas, Nevada 89148. I’m using my cell
right now 201-218-6091 and my new email address is
jeannethatcher@cox.net. I also
saw Jeanie and Bud at a show in Bergenfield that his
singing group Wide Variety was doing. They are
fabulous!! For those of you who haven’t seen them, you
should. They also sang at the Meadowlands Doo Wop show
in June out side and because they got so much applause
they got to sing INSIDE on stage!! I also had dinner
with Carolyn, Sharon (Duggan), and Tina (Reo) at Sue and
Allen Kuebler’s house before I left. It was a lovely
send off. Take care for now and you can share this on
the website. Thanks!

New!
Hi Rip,
Just wanted to let
you know that as of September 1st I will be a resident of
Las Vegas, Nevada! I'm moving out there with my son and his
wife and his in-laws. I have rented an apartment at the
Clubs at Rhodes Ranch for a year and hope to purchase a
condo. His in-laws have purchased a home in the Iron
Mountain section. They closed on it the end of April.
My son and his wife will stay with them for a short time as
they want to buy a house also. As a matter of fact my son is
the only one with a job so far! He works for Franklin First
Financial (mortgage company) and they have applied for
licensing in California and Nevada. California is through
and they are just waiting for Nevada. He will be working
from the New Jersey office via phone and computer till they
find office space. I will find a job when I get there after
I get settled.
My new address is 8975 W. Warm Springs Road, Apt 1034, Bldg
#6, Las Vegas, Nevada 89148. My cell phone number is
201-218-6091. If any one comes out there please give me a
call. We are driving out August 31st with 3 cats and 1 dog!
We rented a tractor trailer through a friend of my son's
father in-law to move all of our furniture and we will drive
our cars out there. I'm really excited about it. We all have
friends out there and we have each other. I get along very
well with his in-laws and my daughter in law is a dream come
true.
And maybe I can visit you in California!
Love, Jeanne
(Calabrese-Thatcher)

12/24/04
Well, I have
made the moved and am now officially a resident in the State
of California. It has taken a bit of adjusting - weather is
different, the geography of the land is different, and my
friends did not move with me - ha. But I like the new job,
and will love the weather once winter gets past.
I have
achieved a life-long dream (well, almost life-long) - I now
own my own Palm Tree! Michael (my ex) was driving through
Stockton on his way back from showing horses in Scottsdale
and told me he had my Christmas present for me. I told him I
could meet him along I-5 (he was towing a horse trailer with
6 horses in it) and he said "NO" - that the present couldn't
fit in the back of the pick up! So I met him at the new
place, and sure enough - inside the horse trailer was a 13'
Queen Palm Tree (no snickering please! - it's one of the few
that can survive the colder temperatures we occasionally get
here).
Wishing all
of you the Best in 2005!
Rip

9/30/04
Promoted and Transferred!
I have been offered a new position
with my company, that will have me relocating to Stockton,
CA. So after 32 years in Portland, I will soon be bidding
"adieu" to this great State, which truly is "God's Country".
This promotion is one I have been chasing for a year, and it
is nice to see the efforts pay off.
It does mean that for the next 2 or
3 weeks, my life will be in a state of flux, so please don't
worry if you send a message in and it isn't replied to
immediately....I will get to it.
Thanks!
Rip

UPDATE: I
wanted to let you folks know the response to the Carolyn
McIlveen Medical Fund was overwhelming. Approx $9,000.00
was contributed!!!! There were kind hearted folks that
donated 2 and 3 times. That was amazing and extremely
generous!
I find it hard
to ask for more :) But....and here is the but.....I need
to call upon you one more time....I am looking for 18
Angels. 18 Angels to contribute $50 a month for the next
2 years. This money will pay Carolyn's monthly medical
insurance premium.
As hard
as it is to comprehend...one more time, Carolyn has been
DENIED, social security, and Medicare, which would have
ended her medical expense worries. NOW, in order to pay
her monthly insurance fee of $900.00......I'm looking
for 18 ANGELS.....
With the
donation of $50 apiece x's 18, Carolyn will be able to
have the health insurance, she so desperately needs, to
keep here healthy. Health insurance pays for numerous
monthly visits to an ear specialist, eye specialist, skin
specialist, brain specialist, MRI's, x-rays,
medicine....and I'm sure some things, I'm not even aware
of.
I will be more
then happy to contribute, as well as organize, and
deposit these 18 Angel monthly contributions. If you find it
in your heart to be part of this plan, please email me and
I'll add you to the list.
Once again,
thanks for all of your generosity in the past, for this
very worthy cause.....and looking forward to hearing the
fluttering of those angel wings.
As always
Elly (Alicia
Levy)

>> As you may have heard in
the news, Bill Stoecker's late wife Eleanor was named as one
of the victims of nurse Charles Cullen. He pleaded guilty in
court Thursday to injecting Eleanor Stoecker with a lethal
dose of the heart medication Digoxin to cause her
death. Our family sat in court to face and hear him
admit to her murder. Bill, his children and
grandchildren are extremely distraught and grief stricken.
Bill loved and still loves
his PHS "crew" and I know he would want them to know
of this tragic event in our family. Eleanor, his wife of 39
years passed away on Feb 12th 2003 at Somerset County
Medical center. Though Eleanor suffered from several health
related problems, her death was sudden, unexpected, and
strange. We believed it was an act of God until we made the
call to prosecutors in December. Her name was already on a
list of suspected victims and we only learned that Cullen
admitted to murdering her 9 days ago. We had 7 days to
prepare for the most horrid and powerful event in our lives.
As of now, we are trying to
save money and take out paid death notices in the papers to
give her justice and give her real cause of death. The
only one we could afford was The Bergen Record. We are also
purchasing a small engraved stone to honor her. We feel as
if we have lost her twice.
Please pass this news to the
PHS crew. I know Bill would want his friends and classmates
to know. He remembers them fondly and loves them dearly.
Best regards,
Emily Stoecker (Bill's
daughter in law)

I am visiting the 63 Website and I would
like to know What Happened to all the classmates that are no
longer with us. Marsha Westoff for one. Irene Liske The last
time I saw Marsha. We were in the local Tavern having a drink.
She was with her boy friend Tony. That was in 91. Just before
I ran away to California. I was there for three years. Got
Divorced, and Remarried. And sad to say came back to the ever
wonderful N.J.
This will soon come to pass. We are
Moving out to California in the Spring of 05. Each day brings
us one day closer, Im going to send you the 5.00 and some
pictures, of the fantastic view we have of the Southern Sierra
Nevadas. And I also have a picture of Ellen Mclean on the bus
trip to Washington D.C. And I will see what else I can find.
Gotta go for now. Talk to you soon.
